DE NEVE : TRANSFORMATION OF DE NEVE BREWERY TO A SUSTAINABLE RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX

In consideration of the sustainable conservation of the silhouette of the De Neve brewery, its image-defining volumes and façades have been retained or re-bricked in the same "mood tone".

They form the “shell" of the past within which a new life gains place.

There is not just a built volume within the shell of buildings B and C; several patios have been “cut out". They provide light and airiness in the deep volumes and guide the visitor from the existing gateways in the shell, to the doors of almost all the houses. The facades of the patios are formed by old and new fill-in walls that should, as far as possible, make the brewery tangible in every home.

Almost every house is built specifically as a function of view - in one direction - on to the beautiful cultural landscape (in the south) and of looking through - in the other direction - towards a fragment of the old brewery.

The brewery becomes a residential complex with a variety of housing types. Given the importance and significance of the former brewery for both the village and its visitors, it has however, not been completely privatized. A concept with a semi-public access to the inner courtyard is proposed. That accessibility is enhanced by the insertion "between courtyard and village street” of commercial areas in building A and hospitality / meeting / conference room below the former malt house (building B).
